14 Coaches Of Ajmer-Sealdah Express Derail Near Kanpur, Many Injured

At least 24 people were injured after 14 coaches of the Ajmer-Sealdah Express derailed near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh early this morning. Rescue teams have reached the spot. Injured have been rushed to hospital. The accident occurred around 6 am near Rura railway station, nearly 70 km from Kanpur, when the train was crossing a bridge over a dry canal in the area, senior railway official Amit Malviya said. “No casualty is there according to preliminary reports. A rescue team has rushed to the spot and a medical relief train from Kanpur has also been sent to the accident site. Currently we are focusing on relief and rescue operations,” Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said. The cause was not immediately known. Ahmed Javed, the state’s top police officer, said all of the passengers have been evacuated from the derailed coaches. Television images showed some coaches lying on their sides. “Immediate medical help being provided to the injured. Mobilized resources,directed all concerned to ensure rescue and relief,” tweeted Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. “Thorough investigation will be carried out to ascertain the cause,” Mr Prabhu said. This is a second recent rail accident in the region. In November, 127 people were killed when several coaches of a passenger train slid off the track.
