I quit RS because I was told to stay away from Punjab: Sidhu

Following a week of speculation since Navjot Singh Sidhu announced his decision to resign from Rajya Sabha (after only two months), the cricketer-turned-politician broke his silence on his decision, addressing the media just before noon on Monday.

In a typically Sidhu-esque address to the media — replete with couplets, poetry, obscure references and random rhetoric, he outlined his primary reason for resigning from the Rajya Sabha: His desire to serve Punjab.

Intriguingly, Sidhu failed to commit himself to the Aam Aadmi Party, making no mention of the party through his address.

“I’ve always wanted to serve Punjab and Amritsar. That’s all,” he said, after stating that the reason he quite the Rajya Sabha was that his party had told him that he would be kept away from Punjab. With the Assembly election in the state just around the corner, Sidhu pointed out that it was the fourth time he was being told to stay away from his state.

“No party in the world is bigger than Punjab,” he said, adding, “Punjab is my home and I cannot leave my home.”

Expressing his disbelief at being sidelined from contesting in his home state for the fourth time, Sidhu asked, “What was my fault? Will someone tell me?” He brought his brief press statement to a close by adding, “People voted for me on four occasions and I will show them the respect they deserve.”
