In Peshawar, 25 killed Taliban strike Shia mosque

At least 25 worshippers were killed and over 64 wounded on Friday when Taliban terrorists attacked a Shia mosque during congregation prayers in Pakistan’s northwestern Peshawar city. The attackers were dressed in paramilitary uniforms and entered the mosque after scaling a wall of an under construction building nearby. “They fired and hurled grenades before three suicide bombers blew themselves up,” said Nasir Durrani, a top Khyber Palhtunkhwa province police officer. “They burnt the vehicle in which they arrived.”

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Muhammad Khurasan claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was carried out to avenge execution of their comrade on December 19. He threatened more attacks. Around 350 worshippers were inside the mosque at the time of the attack. TV footage showed blood, prayer caps, broken windows and panes in the prayer hall.

Eyewitness contradicted the official account saying the number of attackers was seven. “While Friday prayers were being offered, seven armed men disguised as paramilitary soldiers entered the place of worship and started indiscriminate firing and hurled grenades at the security personnel,” said Ali Akber, a worshipper.
