Pakistani Taliban spokesman Muhammad Khurasan claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was carried out to avenge execution of their comrade on December 19. He threatened more attacks. Around 350 worshippers were inside the mosque at the time of the attack. TV footage showed blood, prayer caps, broken windows and panes in the prayer hall.
Eyewitness contradicted the official account saying the number of attackers was seven. “While Friday prayers were being offered, seven armed men disguised as paramilitary soldiers entered the place of worship and started indiscriminate firing and hurled grenades at the security personnel,” said Ali Akber, a worshipper.
